This is the cold tolerant cousin of the more popular Phoenix canariensis. It originates from northern Crete and parts of Turkey. It is one of the only two European palms, the other being Chamaerops humilis (Mediterranean Fan Palm). They have silvery-grey leaves when mature which sport very spiky points and we would therefore warn against planting in areas where children might play.
